In football, the total goals bar is usually set at 2.5, in hockey – 5.5, in NBA – 200.5 points. But in matches, where a goal galore is predictable (for example, when one football team is much better than the other), the bar could be set higher. Vice versa, cup matches in football are not usually rich for goals, and the bar could be set lower.

Types of totals

The common total divisible by 0.5. Everything is clear here, if a bet was on total goals over 2.5, the bet would win only if the teams score three and more goals. If the total is two and less, the bet loses.

Asian total divisible by 0.25. It is more complicated. If we place £100 on total over 3.25, it means that the £50 is placed on total over 3 and the other £50 is placed on total over 3.5. So, if we want our bet to fully win, the teams have to score four and more goals. If they score three goals, we get £50 returned, and lose £50. If the match sees fewer than three goals, we lose the £100.

Totals divisible by 1 (one). There are three possible variants. When betting on total goals over 2, we lose if the teams score zero to one goals, win if the total is three and over, and get the bet returned in case of two goals.

How totals differ

Match totals

This is a kind of bets where a player predicts the total number of goals, points, games and other events in a full-time sporting event (for example, 90 minutes of a football match)

Bookmakers offer both general totals for the match (both competing sides together) and individual totals for the match – separately for an athlete / a team. Totals for separate periods of the game are also offered – from a half to five minutes (available in live-betting).

Total corners

This is a kind of bets that involves prediction of the number of corners in a football match. Bookmakers offer to bet both on total corners in the match and how many corners will be delivered by one of the opponents. The bar is usually set at 6.5-7.5, but this market is more flexible than the goal market.

Betting on total yellow/red cards

Bookmakers are offering bets on totals cards of a single team or both teams. The bet may have two or three outcomes. Some European bookmakers count cards in points, were yellow and red cards are given a certain (different) amount of points, and depending on this amount after the match a player either wins or loses. Usually, bets on card points have three outcomes. However, cards shown to the coaching staff, substitutes, substituted players and other members of the delegation don’t count. Neither do cards during the break or after the final whistle.

Betting on football halves, hockey periods, etc.

This is a kind of bets where a player predicts a number of goals, points, games in a certain time of the match. Bookmakers offer both common and individual totals in such bets.

Betting on total goals in several matches at once in a single tournament

For example, a bookmaker could offer total goals over/under 25.5 in a game week of Italian Serie A.
