The USA got the better of Mexico in Ohio before Christmas (2-0) thanks to late goals from Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie and though that victory was thoroughly deserved, a follow-up win south of the border could prove far trickier to secure.

Mexico are a formidable force on their own patch, where they have lost just once in 30 assignments since October 2018, while they have been bested just once in 42 World Cup qualifiers at home since June 2001.

Head Coach Gerardo Martino will believe he can mastermind another positive result for his side on Friday when a US outfit with a depleted defence limp south.

Key central defenders John Brooks, Tim Ream and Chris Richards are all sidelined with injuries for the visitors, as is starting right back and Barcelona starlet Sergino Dest. With a patched-up rearguard, the USA suddenly look like vulnerable travellers and in Raul Jimenez, Jesus Coron and Hirving Lozano, Mexico have sufficient quality at the top end to capitalise.
