16:20 Lingfield – Gala Celebration @ 9/1 (each-way)

Wednesday’s 16:20 at Lingfield is a race that is certainly there for the taking, and it’s the easy last time out winner Benpeecee who’s currently a short-priced favourite to get his head in front. Richard Hughes’ charge does warrant plenty of respect here, but the one who catches the eye at a much bigger price is Gala Celebration for the John Gallagher stable.

This son of Excelebration – a high-class performer who would’ve won a hell of a lot of more Group 1’s if it wasn’t for a certain once-in-a-lifetime horse called Frankel – hasn’t done a great deal so far, but the form shown on his last appearance looks fairly promising in relation to this contest.

With this being the geldings’ first run for 156 days, a chance is certainly taken in terms of readiness, as well as suitability to the all-weather surface, but from a quality perspective, this horse could turn out to be a bit too useful for this level.

At the back end of last season, the selection ran a pleasing 3rd in a race that looks a fair bit more demanding than this one, both in terms of quality and strength in depth. In clocking a speed figure that is just about the best on offer in this field, Gala Celebration clearly relished the step up in trip that day and, given the weak nature of this race, it probably wouldn’t take anything more than a repeat performance to get seriously involved.

As far as crystal clear form goes, Benceepee is a worthy favourite having won over C&D last time out, although he’s certainly short enough at 2/1, especially since his victory came in a race that was even weaker than this one. Having said that, he’s also out of a very smart performer in Henrythenavigator so could easily be a decent prospect; however, the disparity in prices between him and Gala Celebration doesn’t seem right, and, therefore, it’s worth taking a chance on the John Gallagher runner at nice odds.
