Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has revealed the conversation he had with Luke Shaw seconds before Marcus Rashford scored a free-kick against Wales.

Jordan Henderson has claimed that they allowed Marcus Rashford to take the free-kick against Wales because Luke Shaw convinced them that his team-mate would score it.

Gareth Southgate decided to start Rashford against Wales after he started him on the bench against Iran and the USA and the Manchester United forward repaid Southgate’s faith in him by putting out a man of the match performance against the Welsh side.

Rashford scored twice to help England beat Wales 3-0 to finish the group stage as the winners of Group B with seven points after three matches.

The Man United forward scored his second goal of the tournament shortly after the second half from a free-kick spot against Wales and Henderson has revealed how Shaw convinced him and others to let the 25-year-old take the set-piece.

Speaking ahead of England’s next game against Senegal in the round of 16, Henderson said: “His [Rashford’s] free-kick was amazing. Just before, we were talking about who was gonna take it and I remember Shawry saying ‘Just let Marcus take it, he’s gonna score’.

“We were like alright, fair enough, as long as he scores and he delivered.”

Rashford has scored three goals in three matches in the competition so far, although he started on the bench against Iran and the USA.

He’s currently one of the top goalscorers in the competition with three goals and has a chance to extend his goal tally against Senegal on Sunday night.
