Barcelona has been closely monitoring Ilkay Gundogan, a highly desirable commodity whose contract with Manchester City expires at the end of the season.

Barcelona’s midfield unit has been a subject of concern in recent games due to the absence of the injured Pedri.

This has emphasized the need for a new midfielder, who can not only enhance the quality of the current setup but also provide experience and settle in quickly with Xavi’s tactical philosophy. It is no secret that the Catalan giants will be entering the market for a new midfielder in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The name that has been making headlines lately is that of Manchester City’s star midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan. The German international has emerged as one of the most appealing commodities on the market, with his current contract at the Etihad Stadium set to expire at the end of the season.

According to reports, Barcelona has been keeping a close eye on Gundogan and has already kickstarted the process of signing him on a free transfer in the summer. Joan Fontes, a reliable source, suggests that the Barcelona officials, including the club president Joan Laporta, recently held a meeting with Manchester City’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain and CEO Ferran Soriano to discuss the future of Gundogan.

While Barcelona has the opportunity to acquire Gundogan on a free transfer, the club may face difficulties meeting the midfielder’s salary demands. Gundogan is reportedly seeking a two-year contract with a salary of €10 million per season, which could prove to be a hefty sum for Barcelona, particularly under the current economic circumstances.

The Blaugrana faces a monumental task of reducing €200 million from their wage bill in the summer, and the signing of Gundogan could add to the financial burden. However, his experience, quality, and adaptability to Xavi’s style of play make him an attractive option for the Catalan giants.

Only time will tell whether Barcelona can strike a deal with the German midfielder, but his potential arrival could undoubtedly provide a much-needed boost to their midfield unit.
